દશરથ માંઝી નાની ઉંમરે તેમના ઘરેથી ભાગી ગયા હતા અને ધનબાદની કોલસાની ખાણોમાં કામ કરતા હતા. તેઓ પોતાના ગામે પાછા ફર્યા, કામ શરૂ કર્યું અને ફાલ્ગુની દેવી સાથે લગ્ન કર્યા. ગેહલોર ટેકરીઓ ઓળંગીને તેમના માટે બપોરનું ભોજન લાવતી વખતે, ફાલ્ગુની લપસી ગઈ અને તેને ગંભીર ઈજા થઈ. તેઓ તેમને નજીકની હોસ્પિટલમાં પહોંચાડી શક્યા નહીં કારણ કે શહેર સુધી પહોંચવા માટે કોઈ સીધો રસ્તો નહોતો, જેના કારણે અંતે તેમનું મૃત્યુ થયું.
માંઝી ખૂબ જ વિચલિત થઈ ગયા અને તે જ રાત્રે ગેહલોર ટેકરીઓમાંથી રસ્તો બનાવવાનું નક્કી કર્યું જેથી તેમના ગામને તબીબી સેવાઓ સરળતાથી મળી રહે. તેમણે ગેહલોર ટેકરીઓના ખડકોમાંથી ૩૬૦ ફૂટ લાંબો, કેટલીક જગ્યાએ ૨૫ ફૂટ ઊંડો અને ૩૦ ફૂટ પહોળો રસ્તો કોતરી કાઢ્યો. તેમણે કહ્યું હતું કે, "જ્યારે મેં ટેકરી પર હથોડો મારવાનું શરૂ કર્યું, ત્યારે લોકોએ મને પાગલ કહ્યો પરંતુ તેણે મારા સંકલ્પને વધુ મજબૂત બનાવ્યો."
તેમણે ૨૨ વર્ષમાં (૧૯૬૦-૧૯૮૩) આ કામ પૂર્ણ કર્યું. આ રસ્તાએ ગયા જિલ્લાના અત્રી અને વઝીરગંજ વિસ્તારો વચ્ચેનું અંતર ૫૫ કિમીથી ઘટાડીને ૧૫ કિમી કરી દીધું. પાછળથી માંઝીએ કહ્યું, "જોકે મોટાભાગના ગ્રામજનોએ શરૂઆતમાં મારી મજાક ઉડાવી હતી, પરંતુ પછીથી કેટલાક એવા હતા જેમણે મને ખાવાનું આપીને અને ઓજારો ખરીદવામાં મદદ કરીને સહકાર આપ્યો."
તેમની આ સિદ્ધિ માટે માંઝી 'માઉન્ટેન મેન' તરીકે જાણીતા બન્યા. ૨૦૦૬માં બિહાર સરકાર દ્વારા પદ્મશ્રી પુરસ્કાર માટે પણ તેમના નામની ભલામણ કરવામાં આવી હતી. જ્યારે તેમના જીવન પર આધારિત ફિલ્મની જાહેરાત કરવામાં આવી, ત્યારે માંઝી તેમના મરણપથારીએ હતા. તેમણે કરાર પર પોતાના અંગૂઠાનું નિશાન મૂક્યું અને તેમના જીવન પર ફિલ્મ બનાવવાના "વિશિષ્ટ અધિકારો" આપ્યા. આ 'માઉન્ટેન મેન'ને બિહાર સરકાર દ્વારા રાજ્ય સન્માન સાથે અંતિમ સંસ્કાર આપવામાં આવ્યા હતા.

For twenty five years, the residents of Taj Nagar village near Gurgaon lobbied for a railway station in their village.
ગુડગાંવ નજીકના તાજનગર ગામના રહેવાસીઓ છેલ્લા પચીસ વર્ષથી તેમના ગામમાં રેલવે સ્ટેશન માટે પ્રયત્ન (માગણી) કરી રહ્યા હતા.
When their demand was not met, the villagers decided to take matters into their own hands.
