અરુણ કૃષ્ણમૂર્તિ માત્ર ૧૭ વર્ષના હતા જ્યારે તેમણે 'એન્વાયરનમેન્ટાલિસ્ટ ફાઉન્ડેશન ઓફ ઇન્ડિયા' (EFI) નામની એનજીઓ (NGO) ની સ્થાપના કરી. ચેન્નાઈમાં કાચબાના ઈંડા અને તેના તાજા જન્મેલા બચ્ચાઓને બચાવવાની 'ટર્ટલ વોક' ચળવળથી શરુઆત કરીને, આજે અરુણ અને તેમની સ્વયંસેવકોની ટીમે ચેન્નાઈ, હૈદરાબાદ, દિલ્હી, કોયમ્બતૂર અને પુડુચેરીમાં તળાવો, દરિયાકિનારા અને જળાશયો સાફ કર્યા છે. આ ટીમ તળાવો, દરિયાકિનારા અને પ્રાણીસંગ્રહાલયો સાફ કરે છે, વૃક્ષો વાવે છે, શેરી નાટકો દ્વારા લોકોને જાગૃત કરે છે અને પર્યાવરણ-અનુકૂળ કાગળની થેલીઓ બનાવે છે. અરુણની ટીમમાં એવા વિદ્યાર્થીઓ છે જેઓ ધોરણ-૭ માં હતા ત્યારે તેમની સાથે જોડાયા હતા અને પાંચ વર્ષ પછી પણ તેમની સાથે કામ કરવાનું ચાલુ રાખ્યું છે.
પ્રશ્ન: બાળપણના કયા અનુ ભવે તમને પર્યાવરણ માટે કામ કરવાની પ્રેરણા આપી? તમારી પહેલી પ્રવૃત્તિ કઈ હતી? અરુણ: મારા ઘરની બાજુમાં આવેલું એક સુંદર તળાવ, જેમાં એક સમયે ઘણા પક્ષીઓ, દેડકા અને સાપ રહેતા હતા, તે ખૂબ પ્રદૂષિત થઈ ગયું. તેનાથી મચ્છરોનો ઉપદ્રવ વધ્યો અને એક સુંદર જગ્યા કુરૂપ વિસ્તારમાં ફેરવાઈ ગઈ. આનાથી મને ખૂબ દુઃખ થયું અને હું તેના માટે કંઈક કરવા માંગતો હતો. મેં મારા કેટલાક મિત્રો સાથે મળીને મારા ઘર પાસેનું તળાવ સાફ કર્યું. આ મારી પહેલી પ્રવૃત્તિ હતી.
પ્રશ્ન: તમને તમારા માતાપિતા અને શિક્ષકો તરફથી કેવો ટેકો મળ્યો? શું અભ્યાસના સમય અને પર્યાવરણીય પ્રવૃત્તિઓ વચ્ચે કોઈ સંઘર્ષ થયો હતો? અરુણ: મારા માતાપિતા ખૂબ જ સહાયક (સપોર્ટિવ) છે જેઓ સમજતા હતા કે મારો રસ પર્યાવરણમાં છે. તેમણે મને ક્યારેય મારું મનપસંદ કામ કરતા રોક્યો નથી. મારા તરફથી પણ મેં સુનિશ્ચિત કર્યું કે હું મારા માતાપિતાને ક્યારેય નિરાશ ન કરું. હું જે કંઈ પણ કરતો તેની માહિતી તેમને આપતો અને કોઈ પણ પગલું ભરતા પહેલા તેમની સલાહ લેતો. મારા શિક્ષકોએ મને કામ કરવાની યોગ્ય રીત શીખવી. તેમણે મને નમ્રતા (Humility) પણ શીખવી - જેથી આ બધું પર્યાવરણનું કામ કરવાથી હું અહંકારી કે ઘમંડી ન બની જાઉં અને પોતાને કોઈ સુપરસ્ટાર ન સમજવા લાગું. તેમણે મને સરળ રહેવાનું અને હંમેશા શીખતા રહેવાનું શીખવ્યું. હું કોઈ આંદોલનકારી (Activist) નથી, હું એક પર્યાવરણશાસ્ત્રી (Environmentalist) છું. આ કામ કરીને હું ઘણું બધું શીખ્યો છું.
પ્રશ્ન: તમારી શાળા અને કોલેજે તમારા રસને કેવી રીતે આગળ વધાર્યો? અરુણ: મારી શાળા અને કોલેજ બંનેમાં પુષ્કળ હરિયાળી હતી અને બંને જગ્યાએ અન્ય ઘણા જીવોનું ઘર હતું. આનાથી હું તેમનું મહત્વ સમજ્યો, તે કેટલા સુંદર છે અને આપણે તેમને બચાવવાની કેમ જરૂર છે તે સમજાયું. આ પ્રાણીઓ પોતાના દમ પર જીવે છે, પોતાનો ખોરાક પોતે શોધે છે અને હંમેશા સક્રિય, કાર્યરત અને ક્યારેય આળસુ હોતા નથી. આ ખૂબ જ સકારાત્મક છે; આપણે તેમની પાસેથી ઘણું શીખવાનું છે.
પ્રશ્ન: એક સારો પગાર આપતી નોકરી છોડીને આ ક્ષેત્રમાં પૂર્ણ સમય આપતા પહેલા શું તમને કોઈ સંકોચ થયો હતો? તમારો નિર્ણય લેતા પહેલા તમે કયા વિકલ્પો વિચારી જોયા હતા? અરુણ: તમને જે કામ ખરેખર ગમે છે તેના પક્ષમાં નિર્ણય લેવો એ હંમેશા સારું હોય છે. મેં ગુગલ (Google) માંથી મારી નોકરી છોડી દીધી, પણ હું હજી પણ ત્યાંના મારા મિત્રો સાથે સંપર્કમાં છું. એટલે કે ગુગલમાં મારી ફરજો પૂરી થઈ છે, મારો ભાવાત્મક સંબંધ નહીં. હું સમજી ગયો હતો કે મારે ૨૦૧૦ ની તે ક્ષણે જ નોકરી છોડવી પડશે, નહીંતર હું ક્યારેય તેમ કરવાનું હિંમત કરી શકીશ નહીં. જ્યારે પર્યાવરણને આટલા મોટા પાયે નુકસાન થઈ રહ્યું હોય ત્યારે હું શાંતિથી બેસીને જીવનનો આનંદ માણી શકું નહીં. હું કંઈક કરવા માંગતો હતો અને તે કામને મારા પૂરા ધ્યાનની જરૂર હતી. તેથી મેં EFI માટે ગુગલ છોડી દીધું.
પ્રશ્ન: લોકો જળાશયોમાં કેવા પ્રકારનો કચરો ફેંકે છે? તમે જળાશય સાફ કરતી વખતે આ કચરો કેવી રીતે દૂર કરો છો? અરુણ: ડાયપરથી લઈને જૂના ચંપલ સુધી - તળાવોમાંથી આપણને બધું જ મળે છે. આ ખૂબ જ અસ્વસ્થ કરી દે તેવું છે કારણ કે પાણી એ જીવનનો આધાર છે. આપણે આ જળાશયોની સંભાળ કેમ ન રાખી શકીએ? આપણે આ કચરાનો ઉપયોગ જમીન પૂરવા (Landfill) માટે કરીએ છીએ જેથી બહારના પર્યાવરણને ઓછામાં ઓછું નુકસાન થાય. અમે સુનિશ્ચિત કરીએ છીએ કે તળાવનો વિસ્તાર અને પાણીનો ભાગ કચરામુક્ત રહે જેથી પક્ષીઓ, દેડકા અને સાપ શાંતિથી જીવી શકે.
પ્રશ્ન: એક મોટું તળાવ સાફ કરવામાં કેટલા દિવસ લાગે છે? શું તમે સફાઈ અને સુરક્ષા માટે કોઈ ખાસ સાધનોનો ઉપયોગ કરો છો? અરુણ: તળાવના કદ અને કચરાના જથ્થાના આધારે તળાવને સંપૂર્ણપણે સાફ કરવામાં ૫ દિવસથી લઈને ૩ મહિના સુધીનો સમય લાગી શકે છે. અમારી પાસે પંજેટી (Rakes) અને પાવડા (Spades) જેવા સાધનો છે.
પ્રશ્ન: તમે કેવા પ્રકારના રક્ષણાત્મક સાધનો (Protective gear) વાપરો છો? શું તમે સફાઈ પ્રક્રિયાનું ટૂંકમાં વર્ણન કરી શકો છો? અરુણ: અમે માસ્ક, ગ્લોવ્ઝ પહેરીએ છીએ અને પંજેટી તથા પાવડાથી કચરો ભેગો કરીને કચરાની તગારીઓમાં નાખીએ છીએ જે ટ્રકમાં લઈ જવાય છે. તળાવમાંથી કાદવ કાઢવા (Desilt) અને નકામું ઘાસ તથા ઝાડીઓ દૂર કરવા માટે અમે અર્થ મુવર્સ અને પોકલેન જેવા ભારે મશીનોનો પણ ઉપયોગ કરીએ છીએ.
પ્રશ્ન: તમારા મતે બાળકો અને યુવાનો પર્યાવરણ માટે શું કરી શકે? પર્યાવરણના રક્ષણ માટે આપણા બધા દ્વારા નાની શરુઆત શું હોઈ શકે? અરુણ: પ્રારંભમાં, આપણે બધાએ આપણા ઘરની બહાર કચરો ફેંકવાનું બંધ કરવું જોઈએ. બીજું, આપણે ઉત્પન્ન થતા કચરાનું પ્રમાણ ઘટાડવું જોઈએ. સ્ટ્રો, ટિશ્યુ, રેપર્સ, બેટરી, ફાસ્ટ ફૂડનો કચરો - આ બધું તળાવોમાં પહોંચે છે અને તે આપણા ઘરેથી જ આવે છે. જો આપણે ઘરમાં કચરો ઘટાડીએ અને તેનો સુરક્ષિત નિકાલ કરીએ, તો તે જ એક મોટી વાત છે. પર્યાવરણને મદદ કરવા માટે દરેક વિદ્યાર્થીનું અમારી સાથે સ્વયંસેવક તરીકે સ્વાગત છે.

World Environment Day Celebration

On June 5th, our locality celebrated 'World Environment Day' with great enthusiasm and public participation. Concerned about the worsening condition of our local surroundings and rising pollution, our youth club organized a day-long awareness drive.
The event started at 8:00 AM with an inspiring speech on the importance of preserving natural resources. We organized a poster-making and slogan-writing competition for children, where over 50 students participated. A short documentary film on plastic waste management was screened at the community hall.
Following the movie, all residents took a collective oath to stop using single-use plastics and to plant at least one tree every year. We also led a peaceful rally carrying placards with environmental slogans through the streets. The day ended with the foundation of a local 'Green Club' to maintain cleanliness permanently. It was a deeply satisfying experience for all of us.
