The clever ones, up in the high places know how childish and silly the workers are. ઊંચા સ્થાનો પર બેઠેલા ચતુર લોકો જાણે છે કે કામદારો કેટલા બાલિશ અને મૂર્ખ છે.

This terrible sacrifice would be comprehensible if the thing you die for and call country fed, clothed, housed and warmed you, educated and cherished your children. આ ભયંકર બલિદાન સમજી શકાય (comprehensible) તેવું હોત જો જે વસ્તુ માટે તમે મરો છો અને જેને તમે દેશ કહો છો તે તમને ખવડાવતો, કપડાં આપતો, આશરો આપતો અને હૂંફ આપતો હોત, તમારા બાળકોને શિક્ષિત કરતો અને તેમને પ્રેમ આપતો (cherished) હોત.

Helen has entered the fight against preparedness and against the economic system in which she does not want any favour or quarter.

What does Helen believe about the editors? Ans: Helen believes that editors are an overworked, misunderstood class. She thinks some are ignorant and rely on second-hand information, yet they pity her unnecessarily.
Why does Helen call it (the voice of authority) a trap? Ans: Because the authorities use patriotism and the fear of enemies to distract workers from their own low wages and bad conditions, tricking them into fighting wars.
Why does she call their masters their enemies? Ans: Because the masters exploit the workers, pay them poorly, and force them into harsh conditions, while the workers gain nothing from the wars their masters start.
What is 'blind vanity'? Ans: It is the foolish pride of the workers who believe they have a 'country' to fight for, even though they are treated like slaves and have no real liberties.
What are the consequences of a war? Ans: Millions of young men die, millions are crippled or blinded, human existence becomes horrible, and the legacy of generations is destroyed, bringing only misery.
What, according to Helen is the real freedom of workers? Ans: Real freedom is when lawmakers solely represent the interests of the people, when workers get a living wage, safe working conditions, clean cities, and proper education.
