એકવાર વિજયનગર રાજ્ય ઉંદરોથી પરેશાન હતું. રાજા કૃષ્ણદેવરાયે ઉંદરોનો શિકાર કરવા માટે દરેક ઘરને એક બિલાડી આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. તેમણે બિલાડીઓને દૂધ પીવડાવવા માટે દરેક ઘરને એક ગાય પણ આપી. તેનાલી રામનને લાગ્યું કે આ આખો વિચાર મૂર્ખામીભર્યો હતો.
બીજા દિવસે, તેનાલી રામને પોતાની બિલાડીને એક વાટકામાં ગરમ દૂધ આપ્યું. બિલાડીની જીભ બળી ગઈ અને તે ભાગી ગઈ. રાજાએ પોતાના રાજ્યની તપાસ કરી. દરેક જગ્યાએ તંદુરસ્ત બિલાડીઓ જોઈને તેઓ ખુશ થયા. જ્યારે તેઓ તેનાલી રામનના ઘરે પહોંચ્યા, ત્યારે એક પાતળી અને નબળી બિલાડી જોઈને તેમને આંચકો લાગ્યો. તેમણે પૂછ્યું, "તમારી બિલાડી આટલી નબળી કેમ છે?" તેણે જવાબ આપ્યો, "મહારાજ, મારી બિલાડી દૂધ નથી પીતી." પછી તેણે બિલાડી સામે દૂધનો વાટકો મૂક્યો. બિલાડીએ દૂધ તરફ જોયું પણ નહીં.
રાજા સમજી ગયા કે શું બન્યું હતું. તેનાલી રામને કહ્યું, "મને એક વાત કહો, જો બિલાડીઓને પેટ ભરીને ખાવાનું મળશે, તો શું તેઓ ઉંદરોનો શિકાર કરશે? બિલાડીઓને દૂધ આપવાને બદલે આપણે આપણા ગરીબ લોકોને દૂધ આપવું જોઈએ. જ્યારે બિલાડીઓ ભૂખી થશે, ત્યારે તેઓ ચોક્કસપણે ઉંદરોનો શિકાર કરશે." રાજાને આ વિચાર ગમ્યો અને તેમણે ગરીબ લોકોને દૂધ આપવાનો આદેશ આપ્યો. થોડા દિવસો પછી બિલાડીઓ બધા ઉંદરોને ખાઈ ગઈ. બધા લોકો ખુશ થઈ ગયા.
